(Definitely use headphones to listen to this. Download by right clicking the check mark thingy)
This Song is inspired by Rev. Sonya Milton, Senior Minister at Unity San Francisco. Sonya was visiting us at Unity Albany and giving the Sunday morning message. She quoted a line from a Rumi Poem:
“Break the wine glass… Fall into the breath of the glass blower”
That phrase just kept bouncing around in me and after the service I slipped back into the sanctuary and started playing with that line and seeing where else it wanted to go…
The first verse came to me there.
The second verse came during the week when I was visiting my friends the MaGuires in CT (they have a piano!)
The last verse I finished while eating breakfast Sunday morning…
BTW what’s so cool about Unity Church of Albany (besides the fact that it’s an amazing community of “Spiritual but not Religious” open minded folks) is that they just love to SING! By the final chorus the place was just filled with voices (so you HAVE to listen all the way to the end).
On the Recording: Unity Albany Music Director, Roger Mock is playing guitar and singing. Norma Seaward is singing harmony vocals. I’m playing the piano and singing lead vocal.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this. Here are the printed lyrics:
Break the Wine Glass
Song #432 | 7/31-8/6 2011 | Mark Shepard
Break the wine glass. Fall into the breath of the glass blower
Break the boundaries That used to keep you small
Break the silence Fall into the breath of the sound
Break the patterns Fall to your knees on the groundRefrain:
And on the way you might notice a flower
Growing out of a crack in the sidewalk
And on the way you might notice the power
You have to walk your talk and to dance into your dreaming…Walk the garden
Glimpse the world through the gardeners eyes
Has your heart hardened?
Is there no room left for surprise?
Break it open
Scatter the seeds of surrender
Water them well
Do your best to protect the tender…Refrain:
Your greatest weaknesses
Are also your greatest strengths
Your greatest failures
May have been heaven sent…
Will the wind break you
Or lift you off the ground?
Will the wind break you
Or merely bow you down?Refrain: X2
Break the wine glass…
Fall into the breath of the glass blower…

Just got an email from Norma Seaward who sang harmony vocals on this live recording:
Mark I just listened to this MP3 with headphones. The sound was amazing. It made me realize how sucky my computer speakers are. Your recorder captures and amazing quality of sound. Did you enhance it with reverb? I was blown away.
Roger’s rhythmic chords just before the chorus line were great, and you could hear the congregation on the last refrain like a swelling chorus. That was so nice.
By the way, that song has been stuck in my head for days now. Just the first line, and then the refrain. You were truly channeling something that day.
Norma
