Giving Up On Love Today 11/25/08 Song #389

D                               G                  G7
I’m officially resigning from the act of pining
D             D7
Emotional strip mining
G                      A     D
I’m giving up on love today

I’m tired of the drama and the ensuing trauma
Though I voted for Obama
I’m giving up on love today.

Bm                            F#
Love is just a word for something that’s absurd
G                                     D                       A
It seems like it’s a bird but turns out mostly turd
Bm                                    F#
I hereby give my notice that love is mostly bogus
G                                      D                      A
And so I’ll shift my focus far from it’s hocus pocus

Every time I start feel it. I know I’ll have to heal it
So go ahead and steal it
I’m giving up on love today.

Love is so damn stupid, I feel just like the new kid
On the first day of school wandering like a fool
Head stuck in the clouds oblivious to doubts
Prone to sudden bouts of…being stupid…

I don’t like roller coasters, I’d rather shop for toasters
A puppy or a poster
I’m giving up on love today…

Love is manufactured by a bunch of actors
As the chick flick credits roll away
I need a little sanity, instead of this profanity
I’m giving up on love today

Repeat first two stanzas…

Commentary: Yes this song IS the result of on line dating. Do you have any great online dating horror stories? If so please share in the comments section below. If you want you can even change the names  to protect the “innocent”…or not :o )

Also, I found a great blog site Queen of Relationships she writes about dating and relationships from a woman’s perspective but as a guy I really enjoy her humor and the chance to “get inside” a woman’s head to better understand…(okay understanding is kind of hopeless but a guy can try can’t he?”

Also if you want to check out some of my less cynical love songs just go up to the categories list in the left hand sidebar and click on Love Songs.  It should bring up all the Love Songs I’ve posted so far…

Plenty more in the archives to follow as well.

Thanks for listening and please feel free to share with your friends and exes!

Falling Snow   |   December 15, 1995   |  Song # 247

It was dark but it was not yet late
We took a walk in the falling snow
Holding your hand
Made me feel like a very rich man
And we had nowhere we had to go.

You pulled my face close
Gave me a kiss
Your nose was cold
But your lips were warm...

Time itself seemed to have stopped for us
As the world got very quiet
As we held each other
Our breath hung in the air
And we became more than we had been...

You pulled my face close
Gave me a kiss
Your nose was cold
But your lips were warm...

Days come now, swifter than e'er before

and we sometimes stand bewildered
At the days come and gone
Already turned into song
What else is there left for me to say?

You pulled my face close
Gave me a kiss
Your nose was cold
But your lips were warm...

It is dark but it is not yet late
We take a walk in the falling snow
Holding Your hand
Indeed I'm a very rich man
And we have nowhere we have to go.

You pull my face close
Give me a kiss
Your nose is cold
But your lips are warm...

Commentary: I was scheduled to perform at a Westchester Arts Council Artist in Residence Program in Yonkers, NY in December of 1995. Because it was threatening to snow, no one showed up. I was under contract to provide an hour of music so I basically sat noodling on my guitar. At some point it started to snow and even though it was only 3:30 or 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon it got really dark and the snow came down heavier and started sticking. So I kind of channeled this song imagining what it might be like for an older couple to reminisce about a romantic walk in the snow they'd taken when they were young. And then thinking back on the time that had past and now talking a walk again  together and the love still being fresh and transformative. This is a song I just love to sing and though I had recorded it previously the tape it was on had gotten damaged. So in November I recorded it at Joe Mennonna's studio in White Plains NY, not far from where I wrote it.

If I Were In Love

If I Were in Love, A Song By Mark Shepard

If I Were in Love, A Song By Mark Shepard

If I Were In Love

March 1977, Song # 3

If I were in love

I might write a love song

If you understood

You might sing along

If I was a lover

the kind that writes poems

You and I might make a home

Beyond the thoughts of older goals

Eyes held into each other's souls

Together striving towards the whole

If you felt inside

That you had to be free

I would try not to disagree

And if you liked the clear days

and I liked the rain

I would try to accept the sun's flame

and even on those cloudy days

we'd lock each other in the gaze

That lovers often use to embrace

But when that will be

Is so hard to see

That I will not let it trouble me

So I'll just keep on living

Till the future is now

And someday we may meet somehow

Beyond the thoughts of older goals

Eyes held into each other's souls

together striving towards the whole
