Falling Snow

Falling Snow   |   December 15, 1995   |  Song # 247

It was dark but it was not yet late
We took a walk in the falling snow
Holding your hand
Made me feel like a very rich man
And we had nowhere we had to go.

You pulled my face close
Gave me a kiss
Your nose was cold
But your lips were warm...

Time itself seemed to have stopped for us
As the world got very quiet
As we held each other
Our breath hung in the air
And we became more than we had been...

You pulled my face close
Gave me a kiss
Your nose was cold
But your lips were warm...

Days come now, swifter than e'er before

and we sometimes stand bewildered
At the days come and gone
Already turned into song
What else is there left for me to say?

You pulled my face close
Gave me a kiss
Your nose was cold
But your lips were warm...

It is dark but it is not yet late
We take a walk in the falling snow
Holding Your hand
Indeed I'm a very rich man
And we have nowhere we have to go.

You pull my face close
Give me a kiss
Your nose is cold
But your lips are warm...

Commentary: I was scheduled to perform at a Westchester Arts Council Artist in Residence Program in Yonkers, NY in December of 1995. Because it was threatening to snow, no one showed up. I was under contract to provide an hour of music so I basically sat noodling on my guitar. At some point it started to snow and even though it was only 3:30 or 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon it got really dark and the snow came down heavier and started sticking. So I kind of channeled this song imagining what it might be like for an older couple to reminisce about a romantic walk in the snow they'd taken when they were young. And then thinking back on the time that had past and now talking a walk again  together and the love still being fresh and transformative. This is a song I just love to sing and though I had recorded it previously the tape it was on had gotten damaged. So in November I recorded it at Joe Mennonna's studio in White Plains NY, not far from where I wrote it.

Lift Me Up  |  Song # 171 | 7/20/91

I know you’re out there some where, you dancing warrior
I know you have a message for me like some mystic courier
When you call I get so far away, I get so out of sorts
You’re more patient than a rock, wiser than a tree,
Cooler than a corpse!

Refrain:
Lift me up into the devastating stillness of your eyes
Lift me up onto the rooftops and release me to the skies
Life me up into the lightness till the heaviness subsides
Lift me up…Lift me up…Lift me up…

A flower is a soldier and a butterfly is a thief
A sidewalk is a desert that heaves and buckles in the heat
My thirst is like a canyon and I cannot find relief
So I pray for a cooling breeze to blow on these melting city streets

Refrain:

Bridge:
Love is tenderness, love is war
Love is loneliness, love is more
Love is magical, love is a chore
Love is the ceiling and love is the floor

A crow can wear a thousand masks but a sparrow merely sings
The world is more than what we see and every thought has wings
I challenge you to answer me and tell me what it means
Instead you dare me to wait like glass and see what the Spirit brings

Refrain:

Commentary: This song is from my Visions & Voices CD and is heavily influenced by the writings of Carlos Castaneda. Far from being some weird new age mumbo jumbo I found the concepts contained in his books to be crystal clear and practical for helping one get one's head out of one's butt! One of the key concepts was the step by step elimination of self importance and self pity. Indulging in self pity sucks tremendous amounts of energy from us and is the antithesis of what a spiritual warrior is all about. One of the Toltec challenges given to Castaneda by his teacher, Don Juan Matus, was to erase personal history. Castaneda was left to his own devices to figure out how to do that. I believe NLP (neuro linguistic programming) is "how" to erase personal history. By that I mean NLP gives us specific and precise tools to clear the negative and heavy influence of our past. You've heard someone say "He has a lot of baggage." haven't you? Lift me up is all about letting go of that baggage, erasing the personal history that drags us down and limits us.
