“Life In Song” #17: “Young Man In A Hurry” This is about as autobiographical as they come. Nothing else to say. I believe this is the first and only time I’ve ever recorded this song. So again, that’s part of what this “life in song” project is all about, preserving some of these songs that haven’t been recorded yet.
PLEASE! Use headphones or decent speakers to listen to this instead of your tinny little computer speakers. It’s recorded in crystal clear digital sound and the headphones really make a difference!

Young Man In A Hurry | March 1978 | Song #17
A young man in a hurry
A wind in the weeds sort of fellow
Avoiding the cracks in the sidewalk
As if they were his special worry
He’s the same old case of the man in the crowd
Resenting each unsaid “hello”
Refrain:
He calls himself a stone wall
But he’s really just a stone
He calls himself an island
But he’s really just alone
(and he’s only seventeen but he sometimes feels quite old)
He’s the son of a farmer’s son
His mother’s also quite real
He spent his high school years dreaming
Of his music and some special someone
Who would wipe the clouds from his far searching eyes
And teach him the things that two people can feel
Refrain: (And he’d like to be a highway but as yet he’s still, only a road)
He’s a twentieth century Galahad
He envisions his life as a quest
He knows he’s a hopeless romantic
His realities make him feel sad
But he sees the goals of his life like road signs
And his death as a traveler’s rest
Refrain: ( And he’d like to be a novel but as yet he’s still only a poem
There are so many things left to go unsaid
Things too deep to be seen in the eyes
That this lover of human companionship
Ends up speaking with rocks instead
And he sings a version of his life’s song
But he pads it quite well with white lies
Refrain: (and he’d like to climb the mountain but he’d rather stay close to home)
Tuning: Standard, Capo 2nd fret.
Tuning: Standard, Capo on 2nd fret
