Here’s another song from the unfinished project “Starbucks: The Musical”. This song introduced the lead male character who is “from out of town” and kind of socially awkward. I imagined that the song starts with him and then on each refrain more and more of the other people in the cafe start formally dancing with each other. Because the loneliness and yearning to connect is actually UNIVERSAL.
Then they all go back to their cell phones, computers, books, yellow legal pads or friends… He finishes his latte and walks out alone into the night…
And yeah… I knew this character pretty well LOL. :o)

Ocean Between Us
Song #397 | June-July 2009 | CD: TBD
I’m a good man
Just a little bit lonely
I could use a friend tonight
You seem like someone
Who I could talk to
Who’s company I might enjoy
I’m a little bit shy
Don’t usually do this
Not like those other guys…
All I want to do
Is have a cup of coffee with you
See if I can make you smile
Refrain:
How do I cross the ocean between us?
How do I walk in to your world
Gracefully?
How do I read the signals you’re sending
Without tripping over my own
Two feet?
You stand behind the counter
Of the Starbucks I go to
But how do I get to know you?
What do I say
To make a connection
Without scaring you away?
What do I say so that it’s not awkward
The next time I pay for my latte?
Refrain:
Bridge:
How do I reach across the foam?
Or reach you the telephone?
I know I’m going to end up going home…
Alone..
I’m a good man
Just a little bit lonely
I could use a friend tonight
All I want to do
Is have a cup of coffee with you
See if I can make you smile
Refrain:
(2X)
