About This Song: (lyrics below)
This is one of my first “spiritual but not religious” songs. I wrote it on the Mountain Dulcimer, a simple 4 stringed instrument that you play on your lap. Joni Mitchell used it quite a bit. David Massengill uses it almost exclusively.
The flute was played by my high school friend, Jill Harry.
I wrote 2 or 3 songs on it. Haven’t touched it in years…. Maybe I should get it out of the closet one of these days and see what other songs it has “in” it. :o)
Raised and Called
Song #42 | Spring 1980 | LP: Songs Through A Window
We’re raised and called
From out the darkness
By the power that we only have a name for
The reasons why
Are less important
Than the gathering together of our souls here
Resolved and robed
With shades of West wind
“Carry me Lord!” I shout aloud.
“I’m full of moon
I’m full of stardust
Scatter me, scatter me through the clouds!”
I say, I say to you
A day will come when we will have wings
I say, I say to you
The Spirit surges through all things
I say, I say to you
The road lies out before you now
I say, I say to you
Winter has put on her Spring gown!
We’re pilgrims on
Some endless journey
Traveling, always traveling towards the homeland
Embracing hope
That fragrant lover
We will not allow our “failures” to defeat us.
We’re raised and called
From out the darkness
By the power that we only have a name for
The reasons why
Are less important
Than the gathering together of our souls here
