85 Fire In The Eyes

085 fire in the eyes collage1About this song: (lyrics below)
This song was one of the significant early expressions in my life of what I lovingly call “Spiritual But NOT Religious”.

While being loosely inspired by my “liberal Christian” upbringing, it is a far cry from the dogma, cliche’s and heavy “Jesus” language or “God tawk” that so much “Christian” music preaches.

At the time I wrote this I was attempting to find SOMEPLACE where my music would be accepted, appreciated and valued.

However, whenever I played for “Christian” audiences the over-riding message I got was, “Not Christian enough”.

Secular audiences, felt it was “too Christian”… For me it’s just “Spiritual.”

Spirit manifests itself in so many forms throughout the world that to me it’s ALL spiritual… but it ain’t pushing any particular “brand” of spiritual. Hope that helps. If not,”fire up your eyes” and listen anyway. LOL :o)

Fire In The Eyes

Song #85   |  May 1986   |  CD:

A fragile dawn steals in through my window
Every day another day
And the wonder of it all still thrills me
In fact it takes my breath away

Everyday I glance outside my window
People rushing by
Every day I wonder if they know
What it means to be alive

Refrain:
Look out hope over hell
Look out faith over fail
Look out truth over lies
The truth shall make you well
Look out dream over scheme
Look out time over dime
Look out fire in the eyes
It saves you every time

We’re an Easter people in a Good Friday world
At least that’s what somebody said
Are we mad dreamers or insane lovers
To worship a God raised from the dead?

Lord if you answered all our passionate questions
Would we be happier tomorrow?
Why is it that we “children of joy”
Spend so much time in sorrow?

Refrain:

Let the evening come and hold us closely
Let morning come and keep us warm
Let the fears and phantoms of this world
Leave us whole and free from harm.

Let the ribbon of this well worn highway
Unravel where it will
Let the drifting blossoms of the springtime
Leave you warm and hopeful still

Refrain:

What is courage if you never face fear?
Will you go the extra mile?
And if I could I’d wrap my arms around you
And leave you with a smile…

Refrain:
