This is one of the first kid songs I ever wrote… but truth be told? It is also about freedom. At the time of writing this I was discovering that “things”, cars, houses, careers were a lot less important than I had thought they were… My son turns 30 in a few weeks and he, as well as this song and the conversation we had that sparked it, are still with me…
The cars and houses are gone.

Birds
Song #108 | October 1988 | CD: New Songs/Ancient Stories
Birds don’t carry suticases or shopping bags
Birds don’t pledge allegiance to the flag
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds do not buy real estate or fancy cars
Birds do not watch people through binoculars
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds do not chew bubble gum or smoke cigars
Birds do not play Mississippi Delta blues guitar
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds do not dream dreams in foreign languages
Birds do not crave peanutbutter sandwiches
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds don’t surf the interent or watch TV
Birds do not like cages they’re a lot like me
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
