221 Pool Rap

37405987_sContinuing to celebrate my son Andrew’s 30th birthday this week with another one of my Kid Songs developed over the years as a school and library performer combining Drums, Songs and Stories.

This is one of my first “rap” pieces and over the years it has expanded dramatically.

In a live performance of my DrumSongStory family concert material I will literally start the show with this (actually the story that LEADS in to this) and then weave other songs and stories into it so that it can literally take an HOUR…

In the Shark verse I break off the pool rap and sing my “Sharks” song… then I come back to the pool rap… then when I get to the ice cream verse, I peel off to do my Porcupine Ice Cream song…

Eventually I tell a story about how my sister painted me orange… (YES she REALLY painted me ORANGE!) and from there who knows where I’ll go until we eventually come back to the pool rap for the final refrain… and “wrap”  the whole thing up…

The Pool Rap

Song # 221 | 7/13/94 | CD: New Songs/Ancient Stories

Refrain:
I can dive to the bottom of the pool where it’s cool
I can dive to the bottom of the pool…

I’m treasure hunting for gold doubloons
And I’m holding my breath so I go to find ‘em soon
As soon as I got ‘em I can push off the bottom
And EXPLODE to the surface like a porpoise on purpose
Take a breath of fresh air…
Time to go back there!

Refrain:

Under the waves it’s like a cave
And I’m feeling very, very, very brave
Til I hark to the bark of a great white shark
And it’s coming to get me (save me, save me!)
I scream out loud but only bubbles come out
blub, blub, blub
Why can’t anyone hear me shout?
EXPLODE to the surface, like a porpoise on purpose
Take a breath of fresh air…
Time to go back there!

Refrain:

Now I am an Octopus
I let my arms and legs go to mush
My tentacles flutter…
My skin is like blubber… soft as butter…
“HEY!” SOMEONE just pinched me on my tush!
EXPLODE to the surface, like a porpoise on purpose
Take a breath of fresh air…
Time to go back there!

Refrain:

Oh, oh. I’m getting hungry
(Hungry, hungry, hungry)
I wonder if that Good Humour Man
is out there with his ice cream stand
I hope my mom brought lots of money
Cause I want something yummy for my tummy
EXPLODE to the surface, like a porpoise on purpose
Take a breath of fresh air…

Refrain: (variation: I can Rise…)

THERE’S ICE CREAM THERE!
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
I’ll take a snow cone, and a chocolate eclair….

ummmm ummmmmmm

You want some too?
….FORGET IT! I never learned to share!

Hey!

Quit that poking! I was only joking
You can have a lick but you better do it quick
I think it’s about to fall of the stick!

eeeeew-you …. It just went splurt in the dirt.

You better RUN!

I’m gonna git you! :o)
