It’s a compilation of several different true stories as well as my own experiences dealing with bullying and teasing in school.
Please note: I dislike the term “anti-Bullying” because I’m not “anti” anyone. However people are actually searching for “anti bullying songs” as a keyword and I want them to find this.
Personally, I much prefer “bullying prevention songs” but that’s just my mind set.
The popular notion is that “Somebody’s got to do something about these bullies! Someone’s got to make these kids stop being mean and start being kind and compassionate.”
In a perfect world that would be possible. Unfortunately not everybody has “gotten the memo” to be kind. Ultimately the person with the most power to stop bullying in my own experience is the “target” of bullying. That’s why at the end of the song I flip the refrain from “YOU might understand why I do what I do, YOU might understand why I am who I am” into “I might understand why YOU do what you do I might understand why YOU are who YOU are…” In my experience working with kids one on one in my private practice is that the Bully’s secret is that he or she is being targeted somewhere else in his or her life and is attempting to make themselves feel better at the expense of some other, weaker kid.
Check back soon for the “final mix” with Rilee O’Neill joining me on vocals!
Here’s the final mix or Mastered Mix that I promised you form my new Ce, “The Key To Your Cage” (physical CD Available on Amazon.com):
Lyrics:
If You Could Walk In My Shoes version 3
| 11/19/11- 12/15/11 | Song # 436
Character 1: 5 am the alarm rings again
Character 2: 6:15 I’m standing out in the rain
Character 3: The bus arrives and so does the pain
Character 4: I put on a mask so I don’t have to explain
Character 5: 6:42 I walk into the school with you
Character 6: Who I really am, you don’t have a clue
Character 7: Sometimes I feel like my heart is full of holes
Character 8: Broken laces, worn down soles…
Refrain:
If you could walk in my shoes
If you could walk in my shoes
If you could walk in my shoes
You might understand why I do what I do…
You might understand why I am who I am…
11 am cafeteria line
Eating lunch alone again trying not to lose my mind
You judge and taunt me for the way I look
If you only dared to read more than the cover of this book
Refrain:
2:00 pm. Fell asleep in math again
The teacher woke me up and everybody laughed again
You all had fun at my expense
What you don’t get is that I have no defenses left…
Refrain:
My parents drink and they often fight all night
I can’t sleep because my gut is wound too tight
I don’t remember when the good times stopped
This mask is so heavy I’m ready to drop…
Refrain2:
If I could walk in your shoes
If I could walk in your shoes
If I could walk in Your shoes
I might understand why you do what you do…
I might understand why you are who you are…
