Faith Over “Fail.” Truth Over Lies Song #85, “Fire In The Eyes.” Written May 1986, Recorded March 2021.

Audio: (Please support this project by buying this track on Bandcamp! thanks :o)

Throughout the past 6 months the issue of “the Big Lie” has swept across the US. Ultimately in a world that is increasingly complex and overwhelmed with information, it seems easier than ever to  cause a “disturbance in the Force” with conspiracy theories and disinformation.

But we ALWAYS have a choice to change the channel in our minds.

So this song has been running in my head a lot because it helps ME to change the channel. Hopefully it can do the same for you.

I was all of 25 years old with a 2 year old baby and a new title insurance agency I was starting out of a spare bedroom. I was young and inexperience and we were barely making it. My dream of doing music as a full time living was starting to slip from my conscious grasp (even though with 20/20 hindsight I can see that it was all working out better than I could possibly imagine).

For some reason this song chose me to write it down. And singing it really helped me back then. It’s helping me now as well.

As Spring begins to come to the North country and I prepare to host my first group of heritage breed pigs, the greenhouse is filling up with starts for the most ambitious “apocalypse garden” ever.

All of the events in my life that I used to think of as “failures” start to look like “preparation.”

In these times of massive uncertainty my gut feeling, my “compulsion” of late is to “be prepared for anything.”

One benefit of “anxiety” (the ability to imagine what could go wrong) is that it can help us to be prepared without fear, without attachment to specific outcomes but most of all with a lightness of heart and our feet firmly planted on the healing ground.

As we approach Palm Sunday, Passover, Easter with the Spring equinox behind us I’m meditating a lot on what it means to be “…an Easter people in a Good Friday world.”

In the meantime as the Sun grows stronger and shines longer each day, the frost is leaving the soil. The earth starts to warm up and growing things begin to awaken and rise up again, a true “resurrection” is happening all around us.

Fire In The Eyes

Song #85   |  May 1986   |  Recorded March 2021

A fragile dawn steals in through my window
Every day another day
And the wonder of it all still thrills me
In fact it takes my breath away

Everyday I glance outside my window
People rushing by
Every day I wonder if they know
What it means to be alive

Refrain:
Look out hope over hell
Look out faith over fail
Look out truth over lies
The truth shall make you well
Look out dream over scheme
Look out time over dime
Look out fire in the eyes
It saves you every time

We’re an Easter people in a Good Friday world
At least that’s what somebody said
Are we mad dreamers or insane lovers
To worship a God raised from the dead?

Lord if you answered all our passionate questions
Would we be happier tomorrow?
Why is it that we “children of joy”
Spend so much time in sorrow?

Refrain:

Let the evening come and hold us closely
Let morning come and keep us warm
Let the fears and phantoms of this world
Leave us whole and free from harm.

Let the ribbon of this well worn highway
Unravel where it will
Let the drifting blossoms of the springtime
Leave you warm and hopeful still

Refrain:

What is courage if you never face fear?
Will you go the extra mile?
And if I could I’d wrap my arms around you
And leave you with a smile…

Refrain:

You have put a grown man in tears…

Mark, this song and message really hit home for me today. You have put a grown man in tears. Thank You for what you do. Sometimes I think you sound kind of cheesy, and then others, I think you are a genius, and I’m beginning to realize that you actually care about helping people. So hard to “get out of your own way” sometimes…thanks for the reminder.

For me these songs are transformational lessons in self-love…

Dear Mark, THANK YOU for sending *Spark & Flame*!!!! This CD certainly is a compilation of Conscious Love Songs! As I listen I am transported to memory after memory past, present and future, fulfilled and unfulfilled. I was flooded with many different emotions. I cried, laughed, held my breath and also breathed deep heart-centered breaths of connection to the Divine. I feel joy, grief, sadness, compassion, love, awe, freedom, kindness, gratitude and appreciation. For me these songs are transformational lessons in self-love, releasing, acceptance for what was, what is and who I am. Knowing that I am enough and that I am Divinely Loved.

J

Never fails to move me…

Your incredible music never fails to move me. Thank you, Mark.
